Sidmouth Coastal Community Hub (SCCH) will deliver the fifth annual Sea Fest on the Ham, Sidmouth, on Saturday, May 12.

Starting out as a small event on the Ham in Sidmouth aiming to bring people and groups interested in all things coastal together, the Sea Fest is now a feature on Sidmouth’s annual events calendar.
This year has a special focus on supporting reducing single-use plastics - all food and community stall holders have been asked to use only recyclable or biodegradable products and containers.
Working in partnership with Sidmouth Plastic Warriors, there will be a beach clean on the morning of Sea Fest. Whatever is collected will be used as part of the Creativity on the Coast zone to make and create art as part of awareness-raising about the issue of plastics in the oceans.
This year the event has attracted funding support from the Sid Vale Association – Keith Owen Fund, Sidmouth Town Council and the Big Lottery Fund under the National Lottery Awards for All fund.
Additionally, SCCH directors Mary Bagwell, Kay Davies, Coco Hodgkinson and Louise Cole, working with a volunteer support team including Julie Stoyel – business support and Nick Hannan production manager, have also secured sponsorship support from local businesses including Everys Solicitors, Blinis Café and Bar, Sidmouth Hotels - Dukes and Fords South West Ltd.
Over time, the event has grown steadily to become a vibrant, creative event which gives a shared platform to the many local groups, young musical talent and local artists and food outlets, all of whom work hard to provide sea-based activities and promote community support to protect the coast and encourage everyone to use it playfully and sustainably.
Sidmouth Sea Fest has become a much-loved festival that has galvanised community involvement across all ages and provides a welcome ‘feel good’ event with a responsible message promoting local innovation.
Building on the success of the film about Sidmouth’s fishing past ‘Working the Sea’ (available on the SCCH YouTube channel), this year’s event will launch a new community project community initiative - the FAB (Fish Art Book) Project. This new project aims to produce a book combining seasonal fish recipes and cooking tips, with art made by young people and fishing heritage information.
Sidmouth Coastal Community Hub is asking the community to contribute recipes to include in the book. The FAB project has seed money from the People’s Postcode Lottery (Postcode Lottery Trust) to kickstart the project and local hotels and restaurants are being approached to sponsor recipes from local chefs. There will be a fully equipped demonstration kitchen showcasing some of these easy-to-cook recipes and helping everyone to source local, seasonal fish.
