Movies back at old cinema after break of 50 years

RHAYADER’S The Lost ARC project will soon be bringing cinema and live music back to a venue that was once known as The Castle Cinema and Ballroom.
Having spent three years gutting and restoring the building which was more recently Old Drill Hall and Mace Supermarket, the team still has some way to go before the venue is fully refurbished – including the small matter of sorting out the heating and fitting the kitchen!
Nevertheless there are lots of exciting events planned over the next couple of months, including taking part in Rhayader’s 2nd Dragon Festival at the end of this month.
On Thursday, October 26, with the help of Flicks in the Sticks, there will be the screening of the first films at the venue since The Castle Cinema closed its doors over 50 years ago.
To fit the festival theme, the Lost ARC’s afternoon screening will be How To Train Your Dragon 2. In the evening there will be the more mainstream showing of La La Land.
The Lost ARC has been awarded a small grant towards the cost of purchasing audiovisual equipment, enabling it to set up its own cinema at the venue. On the Saturday of the Dragon Festival, the venue will be hosting an early evening live music event headlined by Cartoon Violence, a local two-tone and Ska band. There will be flame-grilled barbecue, smoky soup and a bar along with dragon face-paints, a dragon egg shy and other shenanigans.
Scheduled events till the end of the year are:
November 2 – A covers night with Llandrin-dod Wells-based band Lucky Pierre headlining.
November 7 – Come and Sing with Ric Johnson, to which all are welcome
November 26 – Telford Arts Company present As You Like It, an actor-muso production.
December 1 – Folk night with Welsh artists Three Legg’d Mare and Cynfenin and Toby Hay
December 2 – Party the night away with some great DJs and Regime, a funk, reggae, hip-hop and rock band playing Rhayader on their way to Leeds from Cardiff, Swansea and Bristol.
December 17 – Christmas concert with VIP, Voices in Partnership, the senior choir of Telford Arts Company.
All the events are to raise funds for the continued renovation of The Lost ARC.
A Lost ARC spokesperson said: “We’ve come a long way in the last few years. There is still a way to go but this is a hugely exciting project. The building is being brought back to life and the community is gaining a fantastic space for rehearsal, for live music, good food and the arts.”
