Keith Owen Fund award for wild flowers in Sid Meadow

The profile of the Friends of the Byes is growing:

And the projects are going very well - with a very generous award being granted by the Sid Vale's Keith Owen Fund to contribute substantially to the sowing of perennial wild flowers in Sid Meadow.

The Friends of the Byes would very much welcome volunteers:
> to help with collecting for the remaining funding this coming Sat 5th April; and
> to help with sowing the seeds on Sat 19th April.

Do come along if you can!

Dear Friends of the Byes

We have been successful with our application for funds towards seeding more of Sid Meadow with wild flowers.

The Keith Owen Fund have kindly awarded FOTB £640. We applied for £740, so this is a very good award.

Volunteers are meeting at the Toll house entrance this Saturday 5th April at 9:45 to collect funds, please come along to help if you can.

Alternately if you would like to send a donation of any amount, please send to:

Friends of the Byes
60 Sidford Road
Sidmouth
Devon
EX10 9LR
Cheques payable to ‘Friends of the Byes’

With a little more effort we should reach our target of £740

EDDC have kindly offered help in preparing the ground in Sid Meadow AKA Roly Poly fields ready for seeding for no charge.

This will leave a relatively simple albeit manual task for FOTB volunteers to scratch up the surface with a rotavator and manually scatter the seed and rake into the soil. We aim to do this on Saturday 19th April 10am – 12 midday, please contact Kati if you can make it along, kati@fitzhenry.me or phone her on 01395 578344 or 07817 041239

So the plan is to leave the previously seeded areas to see what comes up this year and start a fresh are on the lower part of the meadow.

We aim to use seeds from Nova-Flore http://www.nova-flore.com/ also from Goran Farm http://www.goren.co.uk/online_store/ and some wildflower plugs from Bee Talk man Neil Lovesey at Picket Lane Nursery http://www.picketlanenursery.co.uk/

Regards
Michael

These were the suggestions for Sid Meadow back in December:

With some additional notes:
>  Perennial weeds are kept alive by roots, annual weeds germinate from seed: the mix this year will be perennial.
> It will not be necessary to 'subsoil' the ground - as it is very unlikely that there is a ‘hard pan’ under the surface which will need breaking up.
>  Many wild flower mixes specifically need rich and fertile soil to establish and grow; some wild flowers do flourish on scraped areas leaving just the subsoil.
